How to Get Creative with Your Business Card Design
Business cards are a compact, easy to carry, extremely informative method of advertising yourself and your business. Business card printing is one of the easiest and least inexpensive of the many standard advertising options. The low cost of business card printing makes them easy to hand out, but the design can sometimes lack the impetus needed to make the receivers of your card hold onto it. Here are some ideas on how to get creative with your business card design so that it is remembered, kept, and used!
Use the Back
Give your business card added keepability by printing useful information on the back. You can choose something related to your business, but it isn’t required. You might use:
- the game schedule of local sports teams
- your business’s upcoming events
- a brief mortgage calculator
- popular attractions within a close distance to your business
- a favorite recipe
- a map of your location
- a “best of” list related to your business or industry
- a quarterly or annual calendar
Add to the Design
There are several key design elements you can add to your business card printing to make your card stand out from the crowd.
- Images that take up about 1/4 of the surface of your card have a way of distinguishing your card from others whether you use your logo, photo, or a generic graphic image.
- The use of the color red makes an impact, either as the background, font color, or an image.
- Using black as the background color instead of the normal white also creates a striking business card.
- Consider using a photo of yourself which helps people quickly connect a face with the name in addition to standing out from the crowd.
- Use simplicity.
Be Different
These ideas have all been enough out of the ordinary to gain extra notice for your business cards. If you just do not think these are enough for your business card printing, though, here are a few more unique ways to add some more creativity:
- Commission a custom cartoon - especially if it’s related to your industry or business, a cartoon will make your cards a novelty.
- Custom shaped business cards can add a big impact - the shape should reflect your logo or product, but consider business card holders when designing custom shaped cards. You may just want to create rounded corners or a folded design rather than risk being impractical.
- Use a special material like plastic.
- Include die cut-outs like bullet holes, bite marks, burn marks, etc.

One of the wackiest(and most memorable) business cards I have ever seen is by a survival training organization. They hand out visiting cards that are made of beef jerky-they are actually edible!
